Post-punk, shoegaze

  Chance of Ghosts was formed in 2021 in Olympia, Washington by Dave Bailey and John Shultz over their mutual musical Interests and influences.  Drawing upon musical styles such as punk, post-punk, dream pop and psychedelic has made Chance of Ghosts an eclectic mix of genres.

After an early line up change, Chance of Ghosts have solidified their line up that now includes Guitarist Dave Bailey, Bassist John Shultz, Guitarist Jon Merithew       Drummer Heather Dunn and Vocalist Olivia Love.

     Guitarist Dave Bailey had played in bands from D.C. to Arizona to Texas before settling in Olympia. He has been a member of bands like Bullsweet, Butterfang, The Ground, Situation Normal and The RoosterTails.  He brings influences such as country, rockabilly, punk and even zydeco. His chimey tone and generous use of the tremolo bar on his Gretch give Chance of Ghosts that surf guitar sound that is prevalent throughout those songs.

    Guitarist Jon Merithew has been in some of the most important Olympia bands like The Noses and C-Average. His raw style adds a unique sound to Chance of Ghosts and blends seemlessly with Dave's sound which creates COG tone.

Vocalist Olivia Love has been in some of the most important bands that have come out of Olympia. Bands like C-Average and Mosquito Hawk as well as an all female Black Sabbath tribute band Black Bette. Her hypnotic voice and beautiful melodies are reminiscent of singers like Karen Carpenter and Chrissy Hynde  and  bring such depth to COGs music.

     Drummer Heather Dunn needs no introduction. She has been played in numerous bands including early riot grrrl band Tiger Trap, Dub Narcotic Sound System. The No No's and The Raincoats.  She brings influences of jazz, classic rock and early alternative. She is driven and focused and keeps COGs in line. Her professionalism and solid beats are the back bone of COGs sound.

    Bassist John Shultz brings beefy bass lines and vision to the group. He grew up in the Olympia music scene and loved punk rock and alternative music of all kinds since before it was cool. His influences are broad based borrowing from the best, and even consulted with his favorites to develop his distinctive tone. He manages all aspects of COGs from writing to logistics. His heavy rhythmic style takes crazy chances, never breaking character, always staying solid while holding down the bottom end and letting everyone else fly.
